JOM! BUKIT BINTANG 2.0 TURNS MALAYSIA DAY INTO A SUSTAINABLE CITY LEARNING ADVENTURE

155 participants explore Bukit Bintang through urban missions, cultural discovery, local businesses and sustainable mobility

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — 16 SEPTEMBER 2026 — The streets of Bukit Bintang became an open-air classroom on Malaysia Day as JOM! Bukit Bintang 2.0 – Sustainable City Learning Adventure brought 155 participants together for a day of urban exploration, experiential learning and community engagement.

Organised by JCI Bukit Bintang and held at LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre, the non-profit community initiative brought together young people, students, families, friends and members of the public to experience Kuala Lumpur through a combination of digital missions, physical exploration and community interaction.

The programme was led by Organising Chairperson Austin Koid of JCI Bukit Bintang, together with the organising committee, volunteers and supporting partners who contributed across technology, marketing, community engagement and event operations.

The 2026 edition recorded a 210% increase in participation, growing from 50 participants in the previous edition to 155 this year.

Built around the tagline “Move Sustainably. Celebrate Diversity. Build Peace,” JOM! Bukit Bintang 2.0 was designed to encourage participants to look beyond Kuala Lumpur as simply a commercial destination and discover the city’s culture, heritage, communities and local urban ecosystem.

The project’s mission is to transform Kuala Lumpur into a living classroom through digital engagement, cultural discovery, sustainable mobility and community participation, while building a sustainable urban experiential learning ecosystem that strengthens cultural literacy and civic engagement among youths.

WHEN THE CITY BECOMES THE CLASSROOM

At the centre of the initiative was the Urban Learning Passport, a gamified digital experience powered by Talent Valley.

Participants used the platform to complete missions, explore locations and engage with different aspects of Kuala Lumpur’s urban environment.

The experience expanded across 20 city routes and more than 20 landmarks, turning familiar streets and places into opportunities for discovery and learning.

Rather than relying solely on classroom-based learning, the programme encouraged participants to learn through movement, observation, interaction and first-hand experience.

The wider project framework focuses on cultural literacy, youth participation, sustainable urban mobility and stronger connections between people and the city.

MOVING THROUGH KUALA LUMPUR

Sustainable mobility was incorporated into the participant experience, with walking and public transportation forming part of the urban exploration journey.

The project’s reported impact figures recorded approximately:

  • 6,000–9,000 steps per participant
  • 2.5–3.5 hours of active movement
  • 85–95% MRT/public transportation usage
  • An estimated 250–400 kg of CO₂ avoided based on the project’s mobility calculations
  • 20 city routes
  • 20+ landmarks
  • 30 participating vendors
  • 10+ stakeholders
  • 4 new members

The CO₂ figure is an estimated project impact, based on the mobility methodology used for the initiative, rather than a direct measurement of individual emissions.

The approach reflects the project’s broader emphasis on sustainable urban mobility and reducing reliance on printed materials through digital engagement.

CONNECTING PARTICIPANTS WITH THE LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY

The Malaysia Day activation also featured a community bazaar involving approximately 30 vendors.

Participating businesses and entrepreneurs were given an opportunity to showcase their products and services within the wider JOM! Bukit Bintang 2.0 community experience at LaLaport BBCC.

For JCI Bukit Bintang, the business component formed part of the project’s wider effort to connect participants with the people, businesses and communities that make up Kuala Lumpur’s urban ecosystem.

Individual vendor participation and commercial outcomes remained dependent on each business, including its products, pricing, customer demand and operating circumstances.

TWO GUESTS OF HONOUR JOIN THE MALAYSIA DAY PROGRAMME

JCI Bukit Bintang was honoured to welcome two Guests of Honour to the Malaysia Day activation:

Tun Mohd Muaazam bin Mustafa Al-Bakri
Pegawai Belia dan Sukan Kawasan Bukit Bintang

and

Mr Ben Fong Kok Seng

Both Guests of Honour joined the programme and spent time with the organising team and participants throughout the day.

Their presence highlighted the importance of youth participation, community engagement and initiatives that encourage people to experience and connect with Kuala Lumpur in new ways.

MR BEN FONG KOK SENG ANNOUNCES RM5,000 CONTRIBUTION

During his speech at the programme, Mr Ben Fong Kok Seng announced a RM5,000 contribution towards JOM! Bukit Bintang 2.0 as a special gesture of support for the initiative.

The announcement was warmly received by the organising team and reflected the spirit of community contribution behind the non-profit project.

JCI Bukit Bintang expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr Ben Fong for his support and encouragement towards the initiative.

JOM! Bukit Bintang 2.0 was created as a non-profit community initiative, but its purpose extended beyond a one-day activity.

The project brought together 155 participants, 20 city routes, more than 20 landmarks and approximately 30 participating vendors within a single urban learning experience.

It also created opportunities for people from different backgrounds to move through the same city, discover places they may otherwise overlook, interact with local communities and learn through direct experience.

Led by Organising Chairperson Austin Koid and supported by the JCI Bukit Bintang organising team, the initiative demonstrates how a city itself can become a learning environment when people are given meaningful reasons to explore, participate and connect.

Real People. Real Places. Real Action. A Brighter Kuala Lumpur.
